Overview

Aims
The South East London Community Health (SELCoH) study is an epidemiological cohort study that was designed to collect accurate and up to date information about both the physical and mental health of people living within the local communities of Southwark and Lambeth. The study aims to examine the impact socioeconomic factors such as income or education have on people’s health, as well to understand if other demographic factors such as age, culture, ethnicity and/or residence make a difference for people’s wellbeing. The population of Southwark and Lambeth is highly diverse in terms of ethnicity and wealth, ensuring that the study encompasses as wide a range of health service users as possible.

Sample details
The SELCoH study began with a sample of 1698 adults aged 16 years and over residing in 1075 randomly selected households in the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth. Households were identified through stratified random sampling addresses from the UK Small User Postcode Address File, which has near complete coverage of private households. Introductory letters describing the study were sent and followed by up to four visits at different times of the day. Trained interviewers consented and interviewed as many eligible household members as possible. The overall sample was similar to the 2011 UK Census demographic and socioeconomic indicators for the catchment area. Full details of the methods and sample description are reported in Hatch et al. 2011.
